Design: Travel Website

Goals

  • Provide adequate navigation for a 600+ page site
  • Make maintenance easy
  • Define templates that can be used for new pages

Design

There are three types of pages, and a layout for each.

  • Activity Page: lists contents of the site specific to the activity
  • Trip Page: displays a calendar and itinerary with details and photos
  • Subject Page: main content of the site

Navigation

With over 600 pages, navigation was crucial. It was decided that visitors were likely visiting the site based off of activity: climbing, kayaking, etc. Top Level Navigation was based off of this. Based off of an activity, the user can select from a list of places the site covers for that activity. The selection brings the user to the content page.

Navigation on Content Page

Top Menu

On every page is the top menu for easy access to the Activity Pages.

Sub Menu

On a Topic Page, there is a section for links relative to the place. If they are on the "Cape Cod Biking" page, this page will offer links to other Topic Pages related to Cape Cod.

Page Menu

A set of links above the content allows for a quick summary of the page contents as well as a way to jump down to a point of interest.
